Notes on The Calendar Within a few years of the introduction of the Julian Calendar problems arose because of the Romans' use of inclusive counting: even today in the Christian Creeds Sunday is the third day after Friday. This meant that they were actually putting in a leap year every three years. This was eventually rectified by Augustus who corrected matters by cancelling all leap years from (in our year numbering system) 9 BCE to 8CE. This creates endless difficulties for people who want to know, for example, what day of the week was 1st January A.D. 1! See Reference 11.
